Fleet Truck Training

Fleet Truck Tire and Wheel Training - In the Maintenance Facility
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Regulation 29 CFR 1910.177 requires documented training for all employees that handle truck tires and wheels in any way.

•  The TIA Custom Fleet Tire Training Program
allows the fleet to combine classroom instruction and hands-on training in the maintenance facility for commercial and off-the-road tire service.

One of the great benefits of the 400-Level TIA Commercial Tire Service (CTS) Instructor Training and Certification Program outlined here is the "Train the Trainer" concept. Participants acquire first-hand the necessary knowledge and confidence to ensure that tire and wheel assemblies are safely returned to service. As Certified Instructors, they take this knowledge to technicians in the field.

An added benefit of the program is that employers can receive additional liability protection by complying with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training requirements.

Here's how the program works:

• Students register for a 3- or 4-day class, depending on their years of experience. Individuals with less than 2-years experience servicing truck tires are required to attend the 4-day class, and students with more than 2-years experience may enroll in either class.

• Four-Day students spend the first day demounting, mounting, installing, removing and repairing a typical tubeless truck tire with the tools and equipment used in the field. Participants learn every aspect of servicing and repairing medium truck tires and wheels, primarily on a chassis fitted with the three major wheel systems, and through the use of the CTS Manual, a comprehensive resource developed by TIA’s expert staff with input from industry professions.

• All participants wrap up their training by completing a 100-question exam. Those with a passing score are certified as CTS Instructors and receive a certificate, TIA Certified Instructor uniform patches and a 2-year subscription to CommercialTireServicetoday. This publication is the primary vehicle for a continuous source of information for the tire service sector, featuring service procedures and safety guidelines for commercial tire service professionals, as well as the latest tools and equipment for the industry. It includes a quiz that can be used for regular safety meetings or as a training update.

Basic Commercial Tire Service (CTS-200)

TIA’s Basic Commercial Tire Service (CTS) Training and Certificate Program is designed to meet the minimum federal training requirements for both new hires and experienced employees in need of documented training.

The Basic CTS Program is centered on five TIA and industry videos contained on one VHS tape. The first two videos describe the step-by-step procedures and safety guidelines for demounting, mounting and inflating both single- and multi-piece tire and rim assemblies. TIA produced the videos in cooperation with the tool manufacturers, so students receive the most technically accurate and up-to-date practices using tools and equipment commonly found in the field. The third video focuses specifically on inspection procedures for identifying potential zipper ruptures in steel cord radial medium and light truck tires. The final two videos address disc wheel and demountable rim service, maintenance and inspection procedures, respectively.

In addition to the VHS tape, TIA’s Basic CTS Program includes an Instructor’s Guide with complete lesson plans and answers to the pretests. The Instructor’s Guide corresponds directly with the Student Workbook (CTSSB-200, sold separately) and the VHS tape, so it remains an important reference following the training.

Statistics show that employees face a real risk of incurring serious injuries or possible death as a result of improper tire service practices. It doesn’t matter how long your personnel have been servicing tires – accidents happen. In fact… experienced individuals are more likely to sustain injuries when they are in a hurry or distracted. Why wait for tragedy to strike before taking steps to prevent it?
