TIA’s Political Action Committee (PAC)

Did you know that TIA also has a Political Action Committee (PAC) to help ensure that we initiate, build and maintain political relationships with Members of Congress that are sensitive to the needs of our industry? A PAC will open doors and keep them open on Capitol Hill. Contributions to the PAC are an easy way for you to participate in the political process and have a collective voice in Washington.

With a demanding schedule, you don’t have much time to monitor what Congress or the Administration is doing that could affect your bottom line. TIA steps in to take care of your needs—fighting your battles—representing your interests while you run your business.

Federal Excise Tax

As of January 1, 2005 there is a Federal Excise Tax (FET) on medium and heavy truck tires. Congress passed a “simplification” of the FET in the American Jobs Creation Act just before the elections. The new tax calculations are based on the load carrying capacity of a tire as opposed to the weight. Radial tires are now taxed at 9.45 cents for every 10 pounds over 3,500 pounds of load carrying capacity. Bias ply and super single tires are taxed at 4.725 cents for every 10 pounds over 3,500 of carrying capacity. The tax is also based on the maximum carrying capacity which means even if a tire is used in a dual capacity, it is taxed at the single rate.

According to our legal analysts, any tires you have in inventory on which you’ve already paid the FET, you would pass the OLD tax rate on to your end user. The “taxable event” has already occurred. If you have further questions, please contact TIA at 800-876-8372.

Let's face it: The tire industry is in the government spotlight.

TIA is in Washington, D.C., fighting battles daily with Congress, the administration and many federal agencies on behalf of the tire industry.

TIA's TirePAC w as created shortly after the tire recalls of 2000 to assist those in Congress who assist the tire industry. TirePAC helps to ensure the election of officials who are friendly to the tire industry as well as establish and maintain solid relationships with elected officials who support the interests of the tire industry. TirePAC allows each member of TIA to be heard more effectively on Capitol Hill.

Just think… if every eligible member of TIA contributed only $25 to TirePAC, we could raise over $100,000 to give to members of Congress who work for the best interests of the tire industry. Your contribution can help TIA introduce important legislation on issues related to taxes, labor, health care and transportation.

Simply complete the "Prior Approval" form and we'll send you more information about TirePAC.

Eligibility: Must be a U.S. Citizen and a member of TIA.

TirePAC has collected $3,275 in 2003 and the Government Affairs Committee will hold a conference call to discuss the next round of fundraising ideas. TirePAC was unable to conduct a fundraising raffle in Nevada during theInternational Tire Expo due to state laws of the Gaming Commission.

TirePAC will donate $500 to Chairman of the House Small Business Committee Donald Manzullo this week at a fundraising event. Manzullo is a champion for small business issues going to bat on AHPs, FPI and contact bundling, just to name a few.
