Industry Association Foundation Offers Dwight Peel Scholarships
Funds Support Student
Participation in TIA Certified Commercial Tire Service Instructor
Training
The Tire Industry Association (TIA) Foundation is offering $1,000
scholarships in memory of an exceptional young man who lost his life
with the explosion of a large truck tire. The scholarships are designed
to educate commercial tire service technicians to avoid the risks
associated with servicing commercial tire and wheel assemblies.
With the death of Dwight Peel on June 27, 1998, humanity lost a promising
young life. Dwights story touches the heart of every parent
because he was fatally injured when a truck tire exploded and struck
him in the head just two days after his 17th birthday on prom night.
Dwight was an honors student, star athlete and student union president
who aspired to a career in law enforcement. He worked part-time at
a tire dealership in Onoway, Alberta, a rural town outside Edmonton
in Canada.
The scholarships will be awarded to selected TIA members who meet
the qualifications set by the TIA Foundation. Companies must use the
scholarship to educate employees about the hazards and regulations
related to truck tire and wheel service. Dwight Peel Scholarship winners
will use the funds to attend TIAs Certified Commercial Tire
Service Instructor Training Program in Louisville, Kentucky, to cover
tuition as well as a portion of travel and lodging expenses.
Transportation costs prevent many small commercial truck tire dealers
from sending employees to TIAs Certified Instructor Program.
Therefore, the Foundation will award Dwight Peel Scholarships to companies
with less than $2 million in sales and no available training assistance
from their suppliers.
Companies in rural areas are faced with higher travel costs,
says Tom Raben, TIA President. These scholarships are designed
to make TIAs premier Certified Instructor Program available
to commercial truck tire dealers who otherwise could not afford to
attend.
The first of ten Dwight Peel Scholarships were awarded on June 27,
2001, the third anniversary of his tragic death. The Dwight
Peel Scholarship Application is available from TIA and can be
obtained online or by calling 502-968-8900.
