TRAINING UPDATES

Check out a video preview of TIA's newest training program - EARTHMOVER (ETS)!

TIA and Alcoa recently finished a video project they have been working on for over a year that addresses potentially dangerous out-of-service conditions, as well as the issue of heat damage to disc wheels. Alcoa believes the heat damage issue is so important for technicians to be aware of that this video is FREE to TIA Members. For your free copy of the Disc Wheel Inspection video, please call Alcoa at 800-242-9898 option #2; be sure to let them know that you are a member of TIA and would like a complimentary copy of the video.

The new Road Service Safety video is complete and will be available for purchase June 1, 2007. This 25-minute training video addresses the guidelines for operating a road service vehicle. Topics include driver safety, service vehicle positioning, and vehicle lifting procedures in a number of different settings. Every employee that drives a service truck should watch this video as part of their regular training program. The video is available in DVD and VHS and is $50 for TIA members, $100 for non-members. Visit www.tireindustry.org to order after June 1.

TIA’s Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) training program is in the process of being translated into Spanish and French-Canadian. These translated programs will be available in the next few months. TIA is also translating the recent Passenger Wheel Retention Video into Spanish and French-Canadian. Watch the TIA website in the coming months for details.

TIA’s 200 Level Basic Commercial Tire Service (CTS) Training program has a new look! Previously, the Basic CTS program consisted of black and white workbooks and videos or DVDs in a case. We have repackaged them with new graphics and a metallic silver cover. The “kits” will now come in plastic cases. Each kit now includes an Instructor’s Guide, a DVD and a VHS, and one student workbook. The outside looks different, but rest assured the contents of the workbook and video remain the same.

For TIA's Certified Automotive Tire Service (ATS) program, and those who were certified, might be up for recertification. Notices have been going out to those individuals who are eligible for recertification. The ATS recertification exam, like CTS, is available online. If you would like to check the status of your certification, please contact TIA at 800-876-8372 ext. 107.

AUTOMOTIVE TIRE SERVICE (ATS)
TIA’s new training and certification program is directed to technicians working in a typical retail tire dealership. This innovative web-based training for new hires and experienced tire service technicians is unprecedented in the industry. The Certified ATS Instructor seminar is divided into 3-day and 4-day classes.

In the event of an accident, the best protection for a tire dealer is documented proof of training for the technician who performed the service. Basic ATS is designed to meet that need for the more than 100,000 passenger and light truck tire service technicians working in more than 40,000 retail dealerships in North America alone.

COMMERCIAL TIRE SERVICE (CTS)
More than 20,000 technicians currently have the advantage of the most comprehensive training and certification program in the industry. TIA’s CTS Technician Program represents the first step in changing the image of the truck tire and wheel service industry. Companies that choose to invest in education send an important message to their customers and their employees by making safety a top priority. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Regulation 29 CFR 1910.177, requires any employee that handles truck tires and wheels must receive safety training and demonstrate their ability to perform the necessary tasks. By focusing on OSHA Regulations, manufacturer guidelines and industry recommended practices, TIA can deliver accurate technical information to the field, where it’s needed most.

Basic Commercial Tire Service (CTS-200)

TIA’s Basic Commercial Tire Service (CTS) Training and Certificate Program is designed to meet the minimum federal training requirements for both new hires and experienced employees in need of documented training.

The Basic CTS Program is centered on five TIA and industry videos contained on one VHS tape. The first two videos describe the step-by-step procedures and safety guidelines for demounting, mounting and inflating both single- and multi-piece tire and rim assemblies. TIA produced the videos in cooperation with the tool manufacturers, so students receive the most technically accurate and up-to-date practices using tools and equipment commonly found in the field. The third video focuses specifically on inspection procedures for identifying potential zipper ruptures in steel cord radial medium and light truck tires. The final two videos address disc wheel and demountable rim service, maintenance and inspection procedures, respectively.

In addition to the VHS tape, TIA’s Basic CTS Program includes an Instructor’s Guide with complete lesson plans and answers to the pretests. The Instructor’s Guide corresponds directly with the Student Workbook (CTSSB-200, sold separately) and the VHS tape, so it remains an important reference following the training.
