Instructor and Technician Certification

Can you certify your employees? If not here's how . . .
The Tire Industry Association (TIA) is the leading authority for technical training in the passenger, light truck and commercial truck tire and wheel service industries. By utilizing a "train-the-trainer" concept, TIA has created a network of qualified instructors that can conduct training seminars where they are needed the most, in the field. Companies can invest in a key employee and save thousands of dollars by conducting technician certification classes in-house, thereby eliminating the need for travel. Instructor classes offer students a unique combination of classroom and hands-on instruction. Classes are offered in two locations, at training facilities in Denver, Colorado and Baltimore, Maryland.

Automotive Tire Service (ATS)
TIA's newest training and certification program is directed to technicians working in a typical retail tire dealership. The Certified ATS Instructor seminar is divided into 3-day and 4-day classes. Students that successfully complete the 3-day program become TIA Certified ATS Instructors and receive the credentials to train and certify technicians in the field. Students that successfully complete the 4-day program become TIA Certified Advanced ATS Instructors and receive the credentials to train and certify technicians and instructors in the field.

Both programs begin on Tuesday morning. The 3-day students depart on Thursday and the 4-day students depart on Friday. Both Certified ATS Instructor Programs involve extensive hands-on training, so students must demonstrate proficiency in the shop before they are allowed to take the Certification Exam. Classroom instruction covers a wide variety of subjects including:

  • Tire Construction
  • Sidewall Information
  • Vehicle Lifting Procedures
  • Tire/Wheel Assembly Removal
  • Tire Rotation Guidelines
  • Tire/Wheel Assembly Installation
  • Fastener Torque Guidelines & Procedures
  • Demounting/Mounting & Inflation
  • Tire/Wheel Assembly Balancing
  • Diagnosing Tire & Wheel Problems
  • Nail Hole Repair Procedures
  • RMA Recommended Practices
  • Tire Replacement Guidelines
  • Load/Inflation Tables
  • Tire Dimension Charts
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems

Commercial Tire Service (CTS)
Since 1997, TIA's CTS Program has reached more than 14,000 technicians and instructors in the tire and transportation industries. The Certified CTS Instructor Seminar is divided into 3-day and 4-day classes. Students with less than 2 years of experience in the truck tire and wheel service industry must participate in the 4-day class in order to demonstrate the ability to demount, mount, install, remove and repair a tubeless truck tire. Students with 2 or more years of experience can attend the 3-day class and participate in hands-on demonstrations.

The 4-day class begins on Tuesday with the 3-day students joining the group on Wednesday. Hands-on demonstrations and classroom discussion topics include:

  • Tire Construction
  • OSHA Regulation 29 CFR 1910.177
  • Zipper Rupture Inspection Procedures
  • Road Service Safety Guidelines
  • Vehicle Lifting Procedures
  • Hub-Piloted Wheel Service
  • Stud-Piloted Wheel Service
  • Demountable Rim Service
  • TMC User's Guide to Wheels & Rims
  • Single-Piece Demounting, Mounting & Inflation
